Independent special interest spending in Tuesday's election in New Jersey is more than twice its previous all-time high.
“This mind-boggling total of nearly $38 million, unprecedented in state history, is more than twice the previous record $14.9 million spent independently on elections in 2009, " said Jeff Brindle, executive director of the New Jersey Election Law and Enforcement Commission.
The state's largest teachers' union has spent the most. The second biggest spender is the Committee for Our Children's Future, which aWNYC investigation found has ties to Governor Christie. The Republican Governor's Association is the fifth largest spender.
